The light is waning outside. It’s that time of the year. What about the light inside of you? How is that doing? I’ve heard from many people about their waning internal light to match what’s going on with the sun heading south.
Where are you finding light and delight in your life right now? Are you doing activities you enjoy each day? Do you find delight in your work whatever that is? Are you bringing light and delight to your relationships?
This idea of light and delight came to me a couple of times this week. Greg Boyle, a Jesuit priest, who lives and works with the gangs of LA talks about the “duty to delight” in all our contacts and relationships so that we create “kinship”. His book, Tattoos on the Heart is a call to love and delight in even the most difficult of circumstances. And he expresses with genuine delight his love for his community of gangs and their people. Whenever I’m feeling a dark and negative mood within me, he’s someone I turn to and my light rises and dissipates the darkness.
The other source of light for me this week came during a yoga class that was dedicated to owning and delighting in both the light and the darkness within us. The light expresses the best of our social nature, kind attention and interest, curiosity and wonder, compassion and love. The darkness expresses the need to turn inward for self-reflection, rest, and renewal of energies and creative juices. Considering the light, I am reminded that in each moment there is a choice to respond with delight for the people in my life and the life I’ve been given. Facing the darkness, I appreciate this time of year for the signal that it’s time to settle in and reduce activity. With some space and time it’s good to reflect on the year past appreciating the guidance and love I’ve received. Then I can look to the coming year with intentions that I invite to guide choices and actions.
Gandhi offered that we need to be the change we want to see in the world. If you are not seeing much light in the world or not delighting in the life you have or see around you, consider the changes you may need to make.
